What is prenatal care?

Prenatal care involves the medical care you receive throughout your pregnancy to ensure your own health and well-being as well as the healthy growth and development of your baby. You will be seen and delivered by a physician who is intimately familiar with you and your pregnancy.

Prenatal visits include routine checkups, noninvasive screening tests, ultrasounds, and nonstress tests during the nine months of your pregnancy. Highland Park Ob-Gyn Associates can also accommodate high-risk pregnancies that require extra care and medical attention. 

Your pregnancy may be high risk due to complications like:

  • Diabetes

  • History of preterm labor

  • History of preeclampsia

  • Advanced maternal age (over 35)

  • High blood pressure (hypertension)

  • Multiple gestation (twins)

How often do I schedule prenatal care visits?

You should schedule your first visit as soon as you know you’re pregnant so that the doctors can carefully monitor your health and your baby’s development.

Typically, you can expect to schedule a prenatal visit every month until week 28. After that, you’ll visit every two weeks until week 36, at which time, you will start weekly visits until the delivery of your baby.

If you have a high-risk pregnancy, you may need to visit with your Highland Park Ob-Gyn Associates provider more frequently based upon your unique needs.

What happens during prenatal visits?

During your initial prenatal visit, your Highland Park Ob-Gyn Associates provider spends time reviewing your personal and family medical history and any previous pregnancies you’ve had.

They may also perform a physical examination, laboratory studies, and ultrasound.
